Certified Labor and Birth Doula, Trained Postpartum Doula, Trained Placenta Encapsulation Specialist, Trained Lactation Specialist
Hi! My Name is Krystle Niemela. I’m a DONA certified Birth Doula currently residing in tropical paradise on O’ahu, Hawaii. I grew up in a rural part of Upstate NY surrounded by fields, farms and country life. I’ve worked in just about every sector of the hospitality industry and really love to help and serve people. I studied Anthropology in college and interned at Disney World. I’ve lived in Orlando, Florida; Washington State; Tokyo, Japan and now call this beautiful island home. Some of my favorite things are baby snuggles, getting cozy with a book and a cuppa London Fog and podcasts to kill the monotony of laundry mountains. My life partner is a pretty cool dude that works for the US Navy. We have 3 amazing, spunky girls that keep me full of joy and strong coffee.
When I get asked what my work is, I often reply with, “I’m a Birth Doula! I care for hearts, hold hands and squeeze hips.”
But, Krystle. What does that really mean?
In a nutshell, I help people navigate their choices in pregnancy, childbirth and afterward through education and support; both emotional and physical. I aim to bridge the gap by promoting the birthing person’s goals of feeling validated and supported. It’s my intention for families to be actively engaged and participate in their care toward a safe and satisfying birth experience.
Like many people, I came into birth work after the birth of my own children. They all have been vastly different pregnancies and birthing experiences. I had gone from a fearful soon-to-be new mom; to being empowered, transformed and awestruck that I did this. My body worked in ways I had never dreamed of. There were bumps in the road and parts of my labor and births that definitely did not go how I had envisioned. I really could have used the experience and expertise of a doula to help me navigate the best birth for me.
About a year after my second child was born, I took a chance on myself and plunged into doula training. I knew that this is one of my ways help women and babies have better birthing outcomes, one family at a time. I love being able to help families, women and babies in this most transformational and important journey of life.
I believe in birth. It is a normal, natural and sacred process of life and holds great power to transform and reveal. I believe birth is unpredictable and wild and doesn’t like to be tamed by our conventional wisdom. I believe all people deserve respect and dignity around their birth experience and in the postpartum time to foster healthy parents and healthy babies.
Thanks so much for hearing my story. I’d love to know more about you and your family. Let’s make a plan and work together to cultivate your best birth and postpartum experience.
