Aloha! My name is Katja Bajema. I am passionate about birth and care deeply about supporting and informing women during their childbearing years. I am originally from The Netherlands, which in the birth community is known for it's excellent and respectful maternity care. There, low risk women are not treated like patients, but they are clients seen by midwives. High risk women are cared for by OB's and every family receives postpartum care by a postpartum doula for a minimum of 5 days. Growing up in a country where about 30% of babies are born at home has shaped my view of birth. I see it as a normal physiological process that should not be feared. On the contrary, it is a life changing experience that has the potential to shape the way a woman sees herself from that moment onward.
I started my journey as a birth worker after I became a mother myself. I met many other new mothers and quickly learned that my positive experiences with birth were quite rare. I almost stopped sharing my positive stories because I didn't want to make anyone feel bad. But then it dawned on me that what we need is more positive stories, and that women should share those stories and encourage other women to prepare for their own positive births.
I have been supporting families on Oahu on their journeys through their childbearing years since 2011. First I offered only childbirth classes in Honolulu, then I also became a doula serving all of Oahu. After a few years I came to realize there is a much greater need than I can meet by myself. In 2014 I founded BEST Birth Hawaii and in 2015 I started building my team of amazing, professional women who all share my passion for supporting and empowering families during this important time of their lives.
It is my honor and privilege to work with you and to have my team assist you in the way that best fits your individual needs. I look forward to talking with you and welcoming you into the BEST Birth Ohana.
