Birthing Momma Birth Bag Essential Oils
Aloha Parents,
Congratulations on this wonderful time. I remember when I was expecting our first and second daughters - all the feels, and also keenly thinking about, and planning how to have the best birth experience. I was introduced to essential oils 5 years ago when I was pregnant with our second daughter. The aroma of peppermint and lavender in a spray bottle was familiar, calming and energizing at the same time.
I’m in my fourth year of being a birth and postpartum doula, and these oils have enhanced the childbearing year for many of my clients.
The following blends, sprays, and products have been compiled to help you in managing your final stages of pregnancy, labor and birthing process, and newborn moments with your baby. You can use essential oils as natural medicine for a number of ailments, concerns, and calming properties. Get in touch with me to learn more at a class, workshop, or in-person consultation.
Mom, dad, doulas, and birth partners can all use these oils! Enjoy.
For momma during labor and birthing
"Contraction Helper" roller ball – Add 20 drops clary sage, 10 drops geranium, 5 drops lavender to a 10ml glass rollerball. Fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil (or other carrier oil of your choice).
This is a blend of clary sage, geranium, and lavender for mommas to use to help things going with labor. Clary sage is a uterine tonic that aids in bringing on effective contractions. Geranium enhances circulation and is good for assisting momma with muscle tension. Lavender is calming for momma. This “Contraction Helper” blend can also be used in the event of stalled labor. Use this blend when you are ready to naturally encourage your body to get ready for labor.
How to use your “Contraction Helper” roller ball:
Roll onto ankles, then massage the oil into the backs of both feet (particularly the inside of the right ankle, as this is where your reflex points are located). You can do this several times a day.
Roll onto lower abdomen near hip bone areas in front and back. You can do this several times a day.
*Birth partners: continue to use this blend on the bottoms of momma’s feet right after birth. The blend will help the uterus contract back down.
"Energy + Focus" mist - Add 5 drops each of wild orange and peppermint to a 2oz glass spray bottle. Fill the rest with water.
This blend of wild orange and peppermint is for spraying on momma (and dad or birthing partners) during labor. Peppermint can reduce anxiety and is an invigorating, cooling aroma. Wild orange is a refreshing, happy aroma.
How to use your “Energy + Focus” mist:
Spray directly onto momma’s face.
Spay onto cool washcloths and apply to momma’s face or chest.
Use as a room spray during and after labor for everyone’s enjoyment.
“Confidence + Calm” roller ball – Add 30 - 40 drops of Balance (the grounding blend) to a 10ml rollerball. Fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil (or other carrier oil of your choice).
Balance blend will bring feelings of courage and confidence to momma. This blend will keep momma calm and present during birthing, and is wonderful to use on newborn baby too.
How to use your “Confidence + Calm” roller ball:
For momma: apply to back of neck, temples, chest, and bottom of feet. You can also roll a bit onto the back of her hand near her thumb so she can easily smell the aroma. Momma may also want to hold the roller ball and smell Balance throughout labor.
For newborn babe: apply to bottoms of feet after birth and daily as part of your health and wellness regime.
Deep Blue Rub – to rub on momma’s lower back during pregnancy, during labor and birthing. Deep Blue is a very effective muscle and joint relief oil. It is similar to tiger balm or Icy Hot, and relieves pain quickly.
Fractionated Coconut Oil – to use as a massage oil on momma’s back/ shoulders/ feet.
"Bottom Blend" – Add 5 drops each of helichrysum and frankincense to a 2oz glass bottle (or 15ml recycled essential oil bottle). Fill the rest with fractionated coconut oil.
This blend of helichrysum (the liquid bandaid) and frankincense (wound healing and antibacterial/ antiviral) is to protect momma’s perineum and baby’s crown (head) during birth. This blend is also great for postpartum healing of the perineal area.
How to use your Bottom Blend:
Drip this blend directly onto momma’s perineum area during transition when baby's head starts to push and crown. Get directions from the doctor or midwife. Do this several times during crowning.
Your provider will massage all around perineum area for protection.
This blend is essential for postnatal healing, especially if there was tearing and stitches. Refill the recipe for postpartum if you use it all during birth.
Other suggestions:
Diffuser blends: 3 drops each of lavender and peppermint OR 6 drops of Citrus Bliss blend.
Back labor pain: white fir and black pepper essential oils. Massage 5 drops onto lower back and hips with fractionated coconut oil.
Myrrh essential oils can help to intensify contractions. You can use this oil in the event of stalled labor.
